Veterans Disability Benefits in Tennessee

Tennessee boasts beautiful landscapes ranging from the Appalachian Mountains to the Mississippi River. Tennessee is also proud to be the home of over 400,000 esteemed veterans.

These veterans deserve recognition for selflessly serving their country. In honor of their sacrifices, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers various benefits and services to these heroes.

The Veterans Disability program is one such benefit. This program provides monthly financial compensation to Tennessee veterans with disabilities related to their military service.

Understanding the VA Disability Program

The VA evaluates the impact of a veteran's disability using a rating system. The severity of each condition is assigned a rating between 10% and 100%. The larger the rating, the more monthly financial support a veteran can receive.

Usually, a Compensation & Pension (C&P) examination is conducted by the VA to evaluate the disability and assign it a rating.

When a veteran has multiple disabilities, the VA assigns each condition a separate rating based on the VA's Schedule for Rating Disabilities. Then, a combined disability rating is calculated using their algorithm.

Eligibility Guidelines for VA Disability Benefits

To be considered eligible for VA benefits, Tennessee veterans must meet several eligibility requirements.

Both of these must be true:

  • You have an existing condition, either physical or mental, that impacts your health, and
  • Your service history includes active duty, active duty for training, or inactive duty training.

And, at least one of the following must be true:

  • You incurred an injury or sickness during your military service that can be connected to your current condition. This is known as an in-service disability claim.

    or
  • An existing injury or illness from before your military service worsened due to your service — called a pre-service disability claim, or
  • You have a disability that is associated with your active-duty service but it only manifested after your service ended. This is known as a post-service disability claim.

The key to a successful VA disability claim is to provide strong medical evidence that connects your condition to your military service. Accurate medical records from your service can significantly aid your claim, enhancing your chances of receiving benefits.

And remember — your military discharge status can affect your eligibility for benefits. An honorable or general discharge usually means you can access all VA benefits. However, if your discharge was less than honorable, you might not be eligible for VA benefits.

Appealing a Denial

Should your VA disability claim be denied, you can file an appeal. To successfully appeal, it's important to demonstrate that your disability is directly linked to your military service.

To begin your appeal, fill out a Notice of Disagreement form and mail it to the VA within one year from when you received your denial notice. Include your medical records, related documents, and any supportive statements that connect your disability to your military service.

A veterans service officer can help you prepare for your appeal. There is no charge for this service.

  • Education and Training
  • VA Loans
  • VetSuccess on Campus
  • VA Burial Benefits
